Most disappointing new signings for the Chicago Bulls this season: Matt Thomas
As we move into the part of the list where we have some rotational players for the Bulls, we also talk about those players that just haven’t really stood out in a big way on the floor this season. The first one that really belongs to this bucket is the former Iowa State Cyclones sharpshooting guard/wing Matt Thomas.
The Bulls added Thomas to the roster on a one-year contract during Training Camp and the preseason to help add some outside shooting to the backcourt/wing rotation. The part of that which was interesting was the fact that the Bulls handed Thomas a guaranteed deal right off the bat. That did seem a bit premature to me.
Thomas has played in eight games off the bench this season for the Bulls. But most of his minutes haven’t really come at critical points in games.
Nonetheless, he’s averaged around two points per game, one rebound, no assists, and just shy of 0.5 steals, and 0.5 blocks. And he’s shot just 26 percent from the field and 22 percent from beyond the arc.
While Thomas didn’t really get a sustained shot to make an impact for the Bulls so far this season, it seems like that comes with a good reason. He hasn’t done much in the playing time he did get during the preseason and the regular season thus far.
There’s even some talk that it would be worth replacing Thomas in the rotation with the Bulls’ recently signed forward Alfonzo McKinnie, who was inked down to a 10-day contract last week.
