Free agents the Chicago Bulls should’ve signed instead of Alfonzo McKinnie: Sekou Doumbouya
While I’m not saying that there is a home run free agent signing out there for the Bulls’ front office in the former Detroit Pistons first-round draft pick and forward Sekou Doumbouya. But the Bulls could find a potential solid long-term piece in the frontcourt unit that would be more of a project for a few years in Doumbouya.
It could be more of a “prove-it” deal that the Bulls could sign Doumbouya to at this point of his career. And that provides a lot more upside for the Bulls over the long haul than the prior two names on this list.
The Pistons ditched on the Doumbouya project pretty early on in his run in the Motor City. The Lakers also parted ways with him earlier in the 2021-22 regular season after just two games played, where he did register seven points per game while shooting 63 percent from the field and 50 percent from beyond the arc.
Doumbouya is a lengthy and gifted 6-foot-8 and 230-pound forward that is still just 20 years of age. He was one of the prospects in the 2019 NBA Draft class with the highest upside. I actually liked him, at the time, as a dark-horse consideration for the Bulls.
You would definitely get a forward that could make an immediate impact in the size and athleticism on the floor for the Bulls if Doumbouya was signed instead of McKinnie. Doumbouya certainly has a long way to go, but he deserves a shot somewhere still so early on in his NBA career.
