Free agents on Chicago Bulls Black Friday shopping list: Wesley Matthews

Another veteran option on this list that the Bulls could snag off of the free agent market at this point of the season is the 35-year-old former Milwaukee Bucks and Lakers wing, Wesley Matthews. This 6-foot-5 and 220-pound shooting guard/forward is the true definition of an NBA journeyman. Matthews has already played for seven different teams over the course of an NBA career that’s spanned a dozen years.

There were valued contributions that Matthews gave both the Bucks and the Lakers last season. Matthews is also known as one of the fiercest on-ball defenders of anyone at his position in the NBA for the last decade or so.

It is hard to see why Karnisovas and the Bulls wouldn’t want to add a proven veteran that could bring this much valued experience to the locker room as Matthews could. He’s a quality two-way veteran that could still shoot an above-average clip (around 36-37 percent for his career) from downtown and maintain a steady and positive presence on the perimeter/wing on defense.

If the Bulls could capture the production that Matthews gave the Bucks two seasons ago, that would be a perfect fit in this wing rotation. He averaged around eight points per game, three rebounds, and two assists while shooting 37 percent from beyond the arc two seasons ago with the Bucks. He also dialed it up a notch in the postseason with the Lakers and Bucks in the last two seasons.

Matthews would also be maybe the most impactful immediate addition that the Bulls could get off of the free agent market at the moment. He could be a positive presence for this team on both ends of the floor while giving the squad another floor-spacing and scoring threat that is much needed on the wing.
