Free agents the Chicago Bulls were wise to avoid: Dennis Schroder

The smartest free agent target to avoid for the Bulls’ front office during the offseason was the former Lakers veteran point guard Dennis Schroder. It was hard to believe at one point that Karnisovas and the Bulls were willing to go out and sign someone like Schroder among the plethora of other point guard targets available in free agency.

Point guard free agents that were better fits, namely the likes of Mike Conley, Spencer Dinwiddie, and Lonzo most of all, were definitely better ways to look than Schroder given the needs the Bulls had at the position. Schroder is a better fit with his new team, the Boston Celtics than he likely ever would be with the Bulls.

Yet, it is good to see Schroder getting off to a decent start with the Celtics this season. He’s averaging around 17 points per game, four rebounds, five assists, and one steal. And Schroder is shooting around 44 percent from the field, 33 percent from beyond the arc, and 89 percent from the free-throw line.

Those are decent numbers compared to the expected production out of Schroder in his first season with the Celtics.

It was good to see Schroder and Lonzo each sign where they did during the offseason. The Celtics are starting to improve of late and Lonzo is clearly elevating the contender status of the Bulls with his solid two-way production. Schroder is also getting a bigger role with the Celtics than many anticipated early this season.
