Free agents the Chicago Bulls could sign in Nikola Vucevic’s absence: DeMarcus Cousins
The reasons why the Bulls’ front office could look to the free agent market this early in the regular season are twofold. The first is the fact that the Bulls are showing signs of a lack of depth in the frontcourt unit in the absence of Vucevic. There are some young and developing big men that could make an impact for the Bulls in a bigger role down the road.
But key bigs like Bradley and rookie former second-round draft pick Marko Simonovic don’t look ready to fill this type of role yet in the starting five if and when Vooch is absent again.
The second major reason why the Bulls might want to turn to free agency is to fill out an additional roster spot in the absence of second-year forward Patrick Williams. If the Bulls could sign someone that is rather switchable between the four and five, that could help fill some of the void left by Williams, who could miss the rest of the regular season with a wrist injury.
Moreover, an option that I’ve brought up before if the Bulls wanted to bring in a big man that would definitely make a big splash is the former Sacramento Kings and Clippers center, DeMarcus Cousins. The four-time All-Star and two-time All-NBA Team selection is still available in free agency and would definitely be able to make a solid offensive impact for the Bulls’ frontcourt unit.
Cousins has yet to get a legitimate shot to earn a roster spot somewhere around the NBA landscape this season. And considering how he proved that he can still contribute efficient value in a limited starting or second unit role last season, it’s pretty surprising that no one else signed Cousins yet.
