Disappointing Chicago Bulls players early this season: Troy Brown Jr.
There was hope last season that the Bulls would be able to right the ship in the career of the former Oregon Ducks star and 22-year-old shooting guard/small forward Troy Brown Jr. The Bulls landed Brown from the Washington Wizards at the trade deadline last season in a deal that sent center Daniel Gafford to the nation’s capital.
But we really have yet to see much from Brown that has impressed the fans in Chicago. Since landing with the Bulls at the trade deadline last season, Brown averaged 4.9 points per game, 2.8 rebounds, 0.6 assists, 0.4 steals, and 0.1 blocks. And he’s shot 49.4 percent from the field, 34.3 percent from beyond the arc, and 75.0 percent from the free-throw line.
A lot of the shooting percentages are actually up for Brown, but the other portions of his counting stats aren’t doing so well since he began his run with the Bulls late last season.
Brown’s box plus/minus has gone from -2.1 from his time with the Wizards to -3.6 with the Bulls. And he’s rocking a -0.1 value over replacement player since arriving with the Bulls. Most of the statistics (whether basic or advanced) paint a good picture of what Brown brought to the table in Chicago since late last season.
There are signs of life that Brown showed this season in six games played with the Bulls. But the fact that Donovan pushed him even further down the bench following the potential regular season-ending injury to second-year forward Patrick Williams is a sign of where his role with the team could be headed.
We’ve seen this story before for young players in Chicago with the current coaching staff and front office regime in place.
