Who Chicago Bulls should’ve signed instead of Bryce Alford: Luka Samanic
I mentioned earlier this week that one player that was recently waived that the Bulls could consider signing in the latter stages of camp and the preseason is the former San Antonio Spurs big man and first-round draft pick Luka Samanic. The former 19th overall pick from the 2019 NBA Draft of the Spurs was waived sooner than most likely anticipated.
The Spurs parted ways with Samanic earlier this week in favor of signing the likes of the former New York Knicks guard Damyean Dotson. That was a surprising move given how much buzz there recently was surrounding the potential that Samanic had with legendary head coach Gregg Popovich and the Spurs.
If the Bulls were looking to add some frontcourt depth in the form of someone that has a solid fundamental shooting stroke and can play really anywhere between the three and the five, Samanic was a great option. And there is still the possibility that a team like the Bulls signs Samanic.
Donovan and the Bulls did see the former Indiana Pacers and Brooklyn Nets power forward Alize Johnson stick out in a big way through three preseason games so far. It looks like Johnson will be a big part of what the Bulls do off the bench in the frontcourt unit this season.
But there could be other depth needs that arise in the frontcourt heading into the regular season. Thus, Samanic should remain a consideration if the Bulls’ front office turns to free agency for help among their bigs in the regular season. He’s one of the most appealing names among young big men available in free agency now.
