Chicago Bulls: 3 non-guaranteed players likely to be cut
Non-guaranteed players likely to be cut by Chicago Bulls: Stanley Johnson
There were a lot of numbers that the Bulls added at the two-guard spot and on the wing ahead of the start of Training Camp and the preseason. Although there was a sizable need to add depth to the frontcourt unit at the outset of the month of September, Karnisovas and Eversley tackled adding numbers on the wing first.
One of the key players that the front office added on the wing earlier this month is the former Raptors and Detroit Pistons small forward Stanley Johnson. The Bulls added Johnson on a contract that is non-guaranteed for the 2021-22 season, but would pay him a little north of $2 million if he does stick around through the end of this campaign.
Coming out of Arizona ahead of the 2016 NBA Draft, Johnson had a lot of promise as a two-way wing that could be explosive in transition too. But all that Johnson showed in the last few seasons was a good on-ball defensive ability that at least brings some level of value to the table.
There’s not much of any offensive value that Johnson brings to the table. And given some of the other younger and more potent options that the Bulls already have signed to play on the wing heading into next season (i.e. Javonte Green, Troy Brown Jr., Derrick Jones Jr., etc.), it doesn’t make much sense to use a roster spot on Johnson.
This might not be a popular opinion among Bulls fans, but my personal take is that Johnson and Thompson are likely the best options to part ways with first for the front office and coaching staff out of camp and the preseason.
