Underrated players in Chicago Bulls history: Reggie Theus

It wasn’t just his playing days early in his career with the Bulls that made the great scorer and two-time All-Star shooting guard Reggie Theus so special and underappreciated. Theus was one of the most underrated scorers throughout the entire league in the 1980s.

Theus was the Bulls’ primary initiator at the two-guard position prior to the franchise drafting the former North Carolina Tar Heel and all-time great shooting guard Michael Jordan. But that doesn’t take away from the fact that Theus deserved more credit than he got during his playing days in the NBA.

There were four seasons that Theus had where he averaged around at least 20 points per game, six assists, three rebounds, and one steal. That type of production from a two-guard in the 1980s often garnered more All-Star selections than Theus did. In fact, he only got an All-Star nod in one of those four seasons that he pulled off that type of stat line.

It was hard to find something that Theus didn’t do well during his playing days in the NBA. He was a great scorer, tremendous initiator, disruptive defender, and a decent rebounder. About the only two things he didn’t do was shot-blocking and three-point shooting. And one of those aspects he didn’t need in his game, and the other wasn’t important in the NBA in the 1980s.
