Overrated players in Chicago Bulls’ history: Ben Gordon

By no means was the former Bulls shooting guard Ben Gordon either a bad or completely ineffective player, especially on the offensive end of the floor. Just given how much he was used as the Bulls’ primary initiator, key perimeter defender, and facilitator of the offense, Gordon was not the best player to fit into this role.

Gordon was a good scorer that was a key part of the “baby Bulls” throughout the early-to-mid 2000s. But he was also the least efficient player in that core group that also included the likes of point guard Kirk Hinrich, center Joakim Noah, wing Luol Deng, etc.

Gordon was also the highest usage of any of the key baby Bulls in that core in the 2000s.

Unfortunately for Gordon, he and Curry had two of the worst net ratings since the turn of the century for the Bulls compared to the rest of his teammates. Following a solid rookie season for Gordon, which garnered him All-Rookie Team honors, Gordon would finish up with a net rating on/off the court below -1.0 per 100 possessions. The rest of the his run with the Bulls saw glimpses of brilliance, but he never lived up to the star scoring ability he looked to have signs of during his rookie campaign.

This spot for Gordon on the list doesn’t mean that I believe he is the most overrated player in franchise history. But considering a lot of Bulls fans looked at Gordon as a near All-Star caliber talent, the fact that he produced at a mediocre level of overall efficiency during his latter years in Chicago is why he makes it.
