Chicago Bulls’ best options to fill last two-way contract slot: Garrison Mathews

One of the players still remaining in free agency that is hard to believe at this point of the offseason is the former Washington Wizards sharpshooting 6-foot-5 and 215-pound shooting guard Garrison Mathews. This 24-year-old former Lipscomb shooting guard/wing was good for the Wizards in the last two seasons in his particular role.

Mathews is also a rather switchable player on offense given how well he moves off ball and his efficient ability to space the floor. Given what Donovan and the Bulls can get out of someone as reliable of a shooter from downtown as Mathews, this seems like a signing that makes a lot of sense for each side.

Although Mathews isn’t a very good defender, the name of the game for him is reliable shooting. He’s shot around 40 percent from beyond the arc in his two seasons with the Wizards. That led him to post an impressive 131 offensive rating in the past two seasons combined.

Mathews also shot around 89 percent from the charity stripe and hit his corner three-point attempts at a clip of 48 percent in the last two seasons.

The Bulls did bring in the former Iowa State Cyclones sharpshooter Thomas this offseason in a non-guaranteed contract. But Mathews has more of the consistent and proven production as a lethal spot-up shooter that is about as good as it gets in free agency at this point of the offseason in terms of the front office’s ability to find a sharpshooter.
