Best shooters for Chicago Bulls to target in free agency: Garrison Mathews
Among the most underrated shooters available in free agency at this point of the offseason is the former Washington Wizards sharpshooting guard and 24-year-old Garrison Mathews. Really getting his first sustained chance to make an impact with the Wizards last season, Mathews was one of the better spot-up and catch-and-shoot threats in the Southeast Division.
Mathews is a former undrafted free agent signing of the Wizards out of Lipscomb. He signed a two-way contract with the Wizards for each of the last two seasons and performed very admirably.
It’s almost insane how consistent the production was for Mathews in each of the last two seasons. He averaged 5.4 points per game, 1.3 rebounds, 0.6 assists, 0.4 steals, and 0.1 blocks, two seasons ago. And last season, he averaged 5.5 points per game, 1.4 rebounds, 0.4 assists, 0.5 steals, and 0.1 blocks.
But the production that the Bulls would be eager to get out of Mathews concerns his solid shooting percentages. In the last two seasons combined, Mathews shot around 41 percent from the field, 39 percent from beyond the arc, and 89 percent from the free-throw line.
Mathews also gets to the free-throw line often (although he isn’t a high usage player in the slightest) and has an insanely high three-point attempt rate. His free-throw attempt rate for his career sits at .440 and his three-point attempt rate is .833.
