Departing players Chicago Bulls fans should be sad to see go: Daniel Theis

One of the saddest departures for the Bulls this summer was definitely the former Boston Celtics center Daniel Theis. Heading into next season, Theis will be playing for his third different team in a matter of less than 10 months. He started out 2021 with the Celtics, was dealt out to the Bulls, and then signed to take his talents to the Western Conference for the first time this summer.

Karnisovas and the Bulls did at least re-up with one of the two players they landed at the trade deadline from the Celtics. The Bulls inked defensive standout shooting guard Javonte Green down to a two-year contract this offseason to help fill a depth need at the two-guard/on the wing.

But the asking price for Theis just seemingly went too high. There were multiple teams interested in signing Theis, especially after he showed how moldable he could be in different roles after joining the Bulls post-trade deadline. The Bulls did get a trade exception after the Houston Rockets signed Theis this summer.

Theis wound up getting a four-year contract worth around $36 million in total. And while you could make an argument that the roughly $37 million total that the Bulls spent to get the former Los Angeles Lakers point guard Alex Caruso signed could be better spent with Theis, this is still higher than most thought his average annual value would go.
