Bulls rumors played a large role in how this offseason shaped up thus far for this team. Executive vice president of basketball operations Arturas Karnisovas and general manager Marc Eversley were very active for Chicago in hitting free agency to continue to shape this roster heading into next season.
It was clear that if the ultimate goal was to finally get over that postseason hump, that the Bulls needed to upgrade this rotation for head coach Billy Donovan. And AK and Eversley definitely upgraded this rotation, especially in the starting unit, for Donovan ahead of the start of the 2021-22 campaign.
But one player that reportedly (per Ky Carlin of USA Today’s Sixers Wire) had interest in the Bulls but wound up signing elsewhere was the veteran shooting guard/small forward Danny Green. This tweet from Carlin noted that Green also had interest in the Cleveland Cavaliers, Brooklyn Nets, Charlotte Hornets, and Milwaukee Bucks.
In the end, though, Green stayed with the same team that he was with last season. Green would wind up signing a two-year contract worth a total of around $20 million with the Philadelphia 76ers.
Bulls rumors pegged the possibility of Danny Green landing in Chicago
Green is a three-time NBA Champion that has become well-traveled of late. He’s played for four teams in the past four seasons. But he now looks to be with the same team for consecutive seasons for the first time since 2017-18.
Did the Bulls really miss anything but letting Green sign back with the Sixers?
It’s hard to agree to take the side that the Bulls missed out on much by not signing Green. At 34 years old, Green isn’t the same player as he once was. And the Bulls needed more of an upgrade on defense than Green would provide.
The Bulls are now all set in the backcourt unit comparatively to any role that Green would occupy. Karnisovas and the Bulls signed the former Los Angeles Lakers point guard Alex Caruso, New Orleans Pelicans point guard Lonzo Ball, and re-signed former Boston Celtics shooting guard Javonte Green. This team should be set in the backcourt rotation at this point.
Donovan and the Bulls do have a much better roster heading into next season. Green won’t be on it, but the Bulls are looking primed to snap the four-year-long postseason drought in 2022.
