An idea that keeps popping up to the point where it ranks among the most significant Bulls rumors of the offseason thus far links a potential return of the New York Knicks point guard Derrick Rose to his hometown of Chicago. Rose would certainly be an intriguing free agent target for the Bulls, but it feels like there are better options out there.

Before this site, we’ve talked about this site that the Bulls do have better options out there to fill the need at the point guard position than with D-Rose. Some of those options include the New Orleans Pelicans impending restricted free agent and point guard Lonzo Ball, Brooklyn Nets standout point guard Spencer Dinwiddie, and potentially a trade target like Ben Simmons or Shai-Gilgeous Alexander, among others.

D-Rose to the Bulls would be a better fit now than it would’ve been in the past few years. Having a new front office regime and coaching staff at hand in Chicago would help make the transition easier if the Bulls were to sign D-Rose soon.

Latest of the Bulls rumors: Derrick Rose looking for a hometown reunion?

It was rough when the former front office regime of John Paxson and Gar Forman parted ways with D-Rose in that famed trade with the Knicks back in 2016. But now that Arturas Karnisovas and Marc Eversley are the lead voices in the front office and Billy Donovan is head coach instead of either Fred Hoiberg or Jim Boylen, this situation would likely be managed much better.

While it is a tough sell to sign D-Rose this summer if there are other options available, the timing of this is better than most would’ve thought just a couple of years ago. The problem that the Bulls could encounter by signing D-Rose is the injury risk he poses in the role of a starting point guard.

If there is any confidence still remaining that to-be third-year point guard Coby White could still assume significant minutes at the one behind D-Rose, then this is a world where signing the 2011 NBA MVP works out. But there is a very high level of risk associated with signing D-Rose compared to someone like Ball or Dinwiddie over the long haul.

It seems like this is still a move that the Bulls should consider as more of an insurance policy in case nothing works out with their top point guard targets instead of having D-Rose as a top option this summer. A hometown reunion with D-Rose always sounds great in theory but it potentially poses more risks than benefits.

D-Rose had a solid run between his time with the Detroit Pistons and Knicks last season. He averaged 14.7 points per game, 2.6 rebounds, 4.2 assists, 1.0 steals, and 0.4 blocks. And Rose shot 47.0 percent from the field, 38.8 percent from beyond the arc, and 86.6 percent from the free-throw line. It’s good to see his career back on a positive trajectory again in the past three seasons.
