Bulls Rumors: It doesn’t make much sense to pursue DeMar DeRozan
Finding a reason why we should see the Bulls rumors play out to get the San Antonio Spurs star shooting guard/small forward DeMar DeRozan in free agency this summer. The Bulls don’t have much cap room to work with this summer, so it’s hard to find a reason why it makes sense to go after a veteran that could be a rocky fit in the rotation for head coach Billy Donovan.
But according to a report from Marc J. Spears of The Undefeated this week, the Bulls are one of the multiple teams that are interested in trying to sign DeRozan this offseason. Some of the other teams that are interested in DeRozan in free agency this summer are the Los Angeles Lakers, New York Knicks, and Los Angeles Clippers.
It makes more sense for DeRozan to land with those other three teams than the Bulls. The Lakers, Clippers, and Knicks are all in a better position right now to give DeRozan the shot to win a title than the Bulls.
Bulls rumors could peg DeMar DeRozan landing in Chicago
If the Bulls are to spend something in the ballpark of $20-$25 million this summer to go out and get a big-name free agent, it should initially be to fill the need at the point guard position. Go out there and sign someone like the New Orleans Pelicans point guard Lonzo Ball or Brooklyn Nets point guard Spencer Dinwiddie instead of DeRozan.
It’s hard to find where DeRozan fits for the Bulls. He played most of his minutes at the four for legendary head coach Gregg Popovich with the Spurs last season. But the Bulls likely wouldn’t play him there. He would probably be more of a fit at the three between star shooting guard Zach LaVine and to-be second-year forward Patrick Williams.
But that is to say that there’s really a clean fit for DeRozan on this team in the first place.
Moreover, DeRozan had a solid career in the NBA to date. He’s a four-time All-Star selection and two-time All-NBA Team selection. Although he doesn’t have any All-Star selections in the past few seasons, DeRozan is still producing at a very high level.
And while it’s tough to say that there’s a clean fit for DeRozan with the Bulls this summer, that doesn’t mean he won’t find a great home elsewhere. DeRozan still has a lot of quality years left in his career, but the fit just isn’t there with the Bulls at the moment.
