Worst situations that Chicago Bulls PF Lauri Markkanen could land in: Detroit Pistons

It’s hard to tell what shape the Bulls Central Division foe Detroit Pistons will take to heading into next season. The Pistons caught a good bit of luck in the 2021 NBA Draft Lottery by landing the first overall pick. And that will likely afford them the opportunity to select the former Oklahoma State Cowboys superstar freshman point guard Cade Cunningham later this month.

Cunningham could get the Pistons a firm foundation to build this young core around. They have other intriguing young pieces too between the likes of big man Isaiah Stewart, small forward Saddiq Bey, forward Sekou Doumbouya, and point guard Killian Hayes. That could be promising with Cade in the mix, but Markkanen doesn’t look like the ideal fit here.

Landing with the Pistons would put Markkanen in an eerily similar position to the one he was in a few years again with the Bulls young core when the rebuild first started in the Windy City under John Paxson and Gar Forman. That would do anything but help Markkanen to move his career forward at his next landing spot.

Compared to the other two teams on this list, the Pistons aren’t really one of the more often discussed potential landing spots for Markkanen. But it is still noteworthy that Markkanen does his best to avoid landing with a team like the Pistons this summer. Maybe that could be a better fit a few years down the road, though.
