Falling draft prospects for the Chicago Bulls to target at No. 38: B.J. Boston Jr.

A lot of solid finds that are undervalued could wind up coming out of the Kentucky Wildcats basketball program in this draft class. Kentucky was surprisingly one of the worst teams in the SEC last season, with a weird year in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic and one of the youngest rosters in the conference.

That is why Karnisovas and the Bulls might be able to get great value out of someone like the former elite five-star recruit and freshman shooting guard/wing B.J. Boston Jr. A disappointing true freshman campaign in Lexington under head coach John Calipari really decimated Boston Jr.’s draft stock in the end.

Returning to school for a second season could’ve done the draft stock of Boston Jr. some good. In early 2021 NBA Mock Drafts, Boston Jr. was often found as a lottery pick. That has changed greatly in the span of a year.

Boston Jr. still brings an excellent set of physical tools to the table, a good fundamental shooting stroke, and he’s a capable on-ball defender. That is good that he’s a fundamental shooter since he had some problem shaking opposing defenders when trying to create his own looks. Given his length, he shouldn’t need all that shake, though, as long as his shooting efficiency picks up at the next level.

Get a more efficient shooting stroke and more timely court vision, and Boston Jr. could be a tremendous find in this draft. He’s one of the most underrated on and off-ball defenders at his position group in this class. Jumping into passing lanes and creating havoc off-ball is a specialty in Boston Jr.’s game.

The upside for Boston Jr. might be more limited than the other two draft prospects on this list. But he surely has a high floor if Donovan was able to bring his game along on the offensive end as we’ve discussed already. Boston Jr. improved enough down the stretch and has a high enough basketball IQ to be able to fill a decent role the rest of the way in Donovan’s system.
