Falling draft prospects for the Chicago Bulls to target at No. 38: Isaiah Todd
There should be an ideal fit in theory if the Bulls were to select someone as versatile offensively and physically gifted as the former G-League Ignite power forward Isaiah Todd with Donovan’s system. All of the off-ball cutting and theoretical open shots that a stretch forward should be able to have in Donovan’s system is something that should greatly benefit Todd’s game.
But it will take a good while in all likelihood to help round out Todd’s game at the next level. Among second-round prospects in this draft class, Todd might have one of the most promising. This 6-foot-10 and 220-pound 19-year-old power forward has one of the most appealing draft profiles too. He has a solid 8-foot-11.5 standing reach and a 7-foot-2 wingspan.
Just look at how effective it was for the Bulls to get the likes of the former Orlando Magic star center Nikola Vucevic and Boston Celtics center Daniel Theis at the trade deadline for this top unit. Vooch and Theis were both more versatile bigs that had good hands compared to the likes of Wendell Carter Jr. and Lauri Markkanen. The flow of the offense looked much better after getting Theis and Vooch in the mix.
Todd would have to get really accustomed to off-ball cutting and constant movement in the offense especially now with star shooting guard Zach LaVine and Vooch running the show. He could incorporate part of what veteran forward Thaddeus Young did with Donovan this season in getting open-off dribble hand-offs for easy buckets.
In theory, Donovan’s offensive system should be very beneficial to the development of Todd at the next level. And given that he’s got one of the highest ceilings of all the projected second-round big men in this draft class, this pick makes sense for all parties involved.
