Chicago Bulls: 5 slept on FA targets that would be perfect for Donovan
Slept on free agents that would be great for Billy Donovan and the Chicago Bulls: T.J. McConnell
While this might be the least slept on that the Indiana Pacers point guard T.J. McConnell ever was as a free agent, his production is still not respected to the degree it should be this year. It’s easy to argue that McConnell was one of the very best reserve two-way point guards throughout the regular season. He was a real surprise force for the Pacers this season.
In only three starts this season, McConnell was also still a workhorse for the Pacers. He played in 69 games during the regular season and averaged north of 26 minutes on the floor per game. That led to him averaging a career-best 8.6 points per game, 3.7 rebounds, 6.6 assists, 1.9 steals, and 0.3 blocks. And he shot 55.9 percent from the field, 31.3 percent from beyond the arc, and 68.8 percent from the free-throw line.
There might not be that many impending unrestricted free agent point guards that could bring the type of presence to the Bulls’ bench entering next season that McConnell could. He could be the perfect two-way spark plug that Donovan and the Bulls need on the bench.
Disrupting passing lanes, finding open spots to more often than not knock down easy shots, distributing the ball effectively, and rebounding the ball surprisingly well, are all things that McConnell does that most other reserve point guards don’t.
If the asking price for McConnell this offseason sticks south of $6 million, this should be an automatic target for Donovan and the Bulls. His impact would be untold, and that’s something that should catch Karnisovas’ eye.
