Free agent point guards the Chicago Bulls should avoid at all costs: Goran Dragic
Get a version of the veteran Miami Heat point guard Goran Dragic where he is at least three or four years younger, and that sounds like a great situation for the Bulls to fill this positional need. But that’s just not the reality in all likelihood of what whichever team Dragic signs with will get out of him next season.
There was a point in time where Dragic was one of the best stories of any point guard in the NBA. During the 2013-14 season, Dragic received his first career All-Star nod, his first All-NBA Team selection, and was the Most Improved Player of the Year.
Now at 35 years old, the 6-foot-3 and 200-pound Dragic is not the same player that he once was. But given that he could still occupy a valued bench role on a lot of contenders around the NBA, the price for him could still be decently high this summer.
Dragic also had a decent run with the Heat this season, despite some of the struggles for that team to follow up on the special NBA Finals run in the bubble last year.
Facing a team option that, if picked up, would pay him just south of $20 million for next season, Dragic could be an expensive point guard. But there’s little to no chance that the Heat are going to exercise Dragic’s team option this summer.
The likely scenario for Dragic is that he at least gets his salary cut in half on his next deal with a team that needs a veteran presence at point guard coming off the bench. He could still occupy a valuable second unit role on a title contender with the Heat, or elsewhere around the NBA.
