Chicago Bulls undetected options for point guard help: Draft night trade for Davion Mitchell

Among the NBA-ready point guards in this draft class, one of the more potentially realistic scenarios that the front office could look at for the Bulls on draft night later this month is finding a trade for the former Baylor Bears star point guard Davion Mitchell. The former Auburn Tigers transfer and redshirt junior guard Mitchell was part of a National Championship winning team for Baylor last season.

Mitchell brings that type of two-way grit and gifted physical tools to the table that the Bulls could be looking for in their next starting point guard. The rise that happened in Mitchell’s draft stock over the course of last season shows just how potent his skill set could be at the next level.

And Mitchell has an underrated part of his game that gives him the ability to efficiently run the offense in transition, stroke it from deep, and often command the pick-and-roll game on offense. Mitchell’s overall versatility is something that came to the forefront in the last four or six months. But we are largely still discovering all that the 6-foot-3 and 205-pound Mitchell can do.

What the Bulls would get out of Mitchell is a very potent perimeter defender that could be an All-Defensive Team candidate right away, a good floor spacer, and an effective point guard in transition. Although he doesn’t’ have the same burst as second-year point guard Coby White or the same length as combo guard Tomas Satoransky, Mitchell does do a lot that neither of them can.

With Mitchell likely to be a late lottery-to-late teens pick in the first round of the 2021 draft, it might not take the Bulls giving up too much to slide up and snag him. He could be a nice solution for the Bulls heading into next season that could contribute right away.
