Underrated prospects to watch for the Chicago Bulls at the combine: Ayo Dosunmu

Given that the Bulls have a sizable point guard need to fill this summer, drafting someone like the former Illinois Fighting Illini star junior floor general and Chicago native Ayo Dosunmu would make a lot of sense. Dosunmu is a name that Bulls fans have mentioned as a potential second-round draft target in this class for a good while now.

Dosunmu surely had his ups and downs during the past two seasons with the Fighting Illini. But he comes into this draft class with a high enough floor to fill a reserve guard role at the next level. The real difficulty in evaluating Dosunmu concerns figuring out where his ceiling is. He is one of the more experienced guards in this draft class, and he might not have the same ceiling as other one-and-done and G-League guards in 2021.

The sure strengths that Dosunmu brings to the table include his improving on-ball defense, his length at 6-foot-5, and a certain quickness and efficiency as the primary ball-handler in transition that is difficult to match. Seeing how he runs the offense in the scrimmages at the combine, along with how his physical tools match up to the rest of the field will be two of the more notable aspects of Dosunmu’s showing here.

There were more improvements that Dosunmu showed off in his game in the past two seasons on the offensive end than on defense. The likelihood that he continues to have more upside on offense than defense is likely. The hope for the team that drafts him has to be that his gifted physical tools can provide more natural upside for him at the next level as a perimeter defender.
