PG targets for Chicago Bulls that don’t fit with Zach LaVine: Dennis Schroder
One of the more potentially attractive names in this cycle of free agency at point guard is the Los Angeles Lakers floor general Dennis Schroder. The former Oklahoma City Thunder and Atlanta Hawks point guard was also coached by Donovan with a past team. There is some level of connection between the Bulls and Schroder.
It just does not feel like a player that more fits the role of a premier sixth man is the point guard of the future for the Bulls. Schroder is a quality point guard in the NBA, but that doesn’t necessarily mean he would be a quality starter for the Bulls. He is likely going to cost a good amount this summer.
Schroder is a high usage point guard considering he’s spent the last two seasons playing with the superstar duo of LeBron James and Anthony Davis with the Lakers. He’s had a usage rate north of 25 percent on average throughout the past five seasons. And considering his box plus/minus eclipsed zero just once in that span, that production didn’t really come at an efficient rate.
The one positive for the Bulls in signing Schroder out of free agency would be that his assist-to-turnover ratio this season was pretty solid (around six assists to 2.5 turnovers per game).
Another issue with signing Schroder too would be the fact that he’s not very good on the defensive end of the floor. That could cause problems for the Bulls’ backcourt. He’s averaged more than one steal per game just twice in his career, and his defensive box plus/minus has never risen above zero in his career to date.
