Chicago Bulls players who hurt their contract value in 20-21: Coby White
Although he’s not set to hit the free agent market for another two years entering next season, the former North Carolina Tar Heels second-year point guard Coby White didn’t help his case throughout much of his sophomore campaign. Coby was slot out of the gates for the Bulls again this season, showing a lot of the same faults in his game that he did as a rookie.
As still a fan favorite of the Bulls and a player that should still hold a valuable spot in the Bulls backcourt rotation moving forward, White should still be around for a while here.
The good news in regard to Coby’s complete body of work in the season that was is that he ended the season on a high note. He started to find his rhythm back in the role of the Bulls starting point guard down the stretch. He averaged a season-high in points per game, steals, along with defensive rating, and three-point shooting percentage, in the final month of the regular season.
That doesn’t subside the rather mediocre to poor advanced metrics and counting stats that White put up for the rest of the regular season, though. He still registered a less than stellar -2.6 box plus/minus rating, -0.3 value over replacement player rating, .052 win shares per 48 minutes, and a 54.0 true shooting percentage.
White started to find his game down the stretch in certain regards, and it looks like Karnisovas should have a more clear-cut role for him moving forward. But the possibility of White becoming a quality starting point guard in the NBA from here on out looks to be pretty dim.
