Big offseason decisions for AK and the Chicago Bulls: Who’s the point guard of the future?

The other question that seems to be flying around the discussion circles among Bulls fans early this offseason is what will happen with the point guard in the starting unit. First-year head coach Billy Donovan split a lot of the starts at the one in the starting unit in the season that was between second-year point guard Coby White and combo guard Tomas Satoransky.

While there is likely to be a long-term role for White in this Bulls backcourt rotation in some form or fashion, it’s hard to see where Sato fits in over the long haul. Next season is set to be the last on his current contract, and it’s only partially guaranteed. That does make him a rather valuable asset if Karnisovas and Eversley decided to shop him around on the trade block this offseason.

Everyone should be sure that most Bulls fans would love the addition of someone like veteran star point guard Chris Paul, one-time NBA Champion Kyle Lowry, or New Orleans Pelicans impending restricted free agent Lonzo Ball. But only one of those three is likely to be a realistic free agent signing/sign-and-trade target for Karnisovas and the Bulls in the summer.

The best situation moving forward for the Bulls would clearly be if they could sign someone like Lonzo out of free agency this summer, and keep Coby in more of a volume scoring sixth or seventh man role. Coby finished out the regular season on a high-note once again, which is hopefully some momentum he can take into next season.
