Ahead of the Chicago Bulls game against the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden, former Bulls coach and current Knicks coach Tom Thibodeau spoke highly of Bulls all-star Zach LaVine. While many have been surprised by his ascension to all-star status, Thibs is not surprised by LaVine’s success.
The two have a connection from their time with the Minnesota Timberwolves. LaVine played under Thibodeau for one season before being the centerpiece of the Jimmy Butler trade. That season was the 2016-17 NBA season, LaVine’s third in the NBA.
He has come a long way since then. His numbers across the board are significantly better, most impressively the massive leaps he has taken over the years in shooting percentage despite a higher volume of shots.
Thibs isn’t surprised at the growth LaVine has made as a player, though. He referred to him as a “hard worker” and “gym rat” ahead of the Bulls Knicks game on Wednesday night.
"“Hard worker, gym rat. He’s gotten better every year. So I’m not surprised that he’s had the success that he’s had.”"
LaVine remains out for the Bulls as he works through the league’s health and safety protocols. His extended absence could cost the Bulls a playoff spot, but the situation seems to be out of their control regarding his current status.
Chicago Bulls: LaVine is the face of the franchise
While it is disappointing he is not with the team, fans can’t allow themselves to forget all he has done and shown this season. Like Thibodeau says, LaVine has gotten better every single year of his career and this season that led to his first all-star game selection.
Who knows what happens next season, but evidence seems to suggest another big step forward could be taken. If that is the case, the sky is the limit for LaVine. He is the unquestioned face of the franchise and the future outlook of this team remains positive despite how this year plays out.
Thibs saw him up close and personal years ago, when LaVine was practically a kid still. His commitment and hard work stood out to Thibs and that supports what is already clear: Zach LaVine is the unquestioned face of the franchise for the Chicago Bulls.
