One storyline that really came to the forefront of late for Donovan and the Bulls is the lackluster defensive play of second-year former North Carolina Tar Heels point guard Coby White. Since the Bulls are really struggling on the defensive end of the floor as a whole, the way that White is getting beat consistency off-the-dribble on the perimeter is a problem.

The Bulls have to improve their perimeter defending before the rest can come together. Missing veteran shooting guard Garrett Temple is really taking its toll on this team. And picking up the likes of former Washington Wizards shooting guard/small forward Troy Brown Jr. and ex-Boston Celtics shooting guard Javonte Green at the deadline hasn’t helped out all that much.

For the season in total, White has registered a -1.8 defensive box plus/minus rating, 115 defensive rating, and a steal and block percentage both below 1.0. And his advanced metrics as a whole this season still don’t show much of any progress in his game.

He’s registered a -3.7 box plus/minus rating, -0.6 value over replacement player rating, .036 win shares per 48 minutes, and a 11.1 player efficiency rating.

In the loss to the Grizzlies on April 12, White registered just six points on 2-of-8 shooting from the field, along with two rebounds, two assists, no steals, no blocks, and two turnovers.
