Trades to get DeRozan from the Spurs No. 2

Although this trade deal would hypothetically still present challenges for the Bulls to fill a need both at the point guard position and in their frontcourt rotation, this one has a nice ring to it for the future core of the team. In this particular trade deal, Karnisovas and the Bulls would ship off a duo that includes third-year former Duke Blue Devils center Wendell Carter Jr. and OPJ.

The return that the Bulls would get from the Spurs includes athletic and twitchy two-guard Lonnie Walker and DeRozan. The Bulls would clearly get some added depth both at shooting guard and on the wing. DeRozan and Walker are both usually more consistently healthy than the likes of OPJ and WCJ.

The problem that Donovan and the Bulls would still run into with this player exchange is the lack of frontcourt help, and what to do with the likes of combo guard Tomas Satoransky and second-year point guard Coby White in the backcourt. DeRozan and LaVine would likely be in the starting five together, or one of the two would be in more of a sixth man role with very heavy minutes off the bench.

For the time being, Donovan could at least have added depth in the backcourt rotation as a whole. He could figure out how to distribute minutes between Sato and White accordingly, and then run with a more athletic and lengthy guard rotation the rest of the way.

WCJ is one that the Bulls are having a tough time finding a role for at the moment. Trading him while his value is still high and when he’s close to entering the final year of his rookie contract does make a lot of sense.
