What does Malcolm Brogdon bring?
As previously mentioned, the Bulls are crying out for a guard who can defend and make the right plays on offense. Brogdon fits the bill perfectly, as he is currently averaging (per Basketball Reference) over six assists (6.1) per game, while also pickpocketing opponents over 1 time per game (1.1).
Compare that to White’s 0.5 steals per game and 4.7 assists, and at face value, you have a better defender and playmaker. But defense and decision-making are not purely based on numbers, luckily for Brogdon, the eye test also backs up this assertion.
Brogdon has proven that he can disrupt the opposing team’s best perimeter players with his long wingspan, forcing them into tough decisions and eventually, turnovers.
On the other side of the ball, he provides smart decision-making out of the pick and roll (a play that the Bulls run at the second-highest frequency in the NBA at 7.7% per NBA.com/stats). This is further elaborated on in an articled posted by 8pointsin9seconds.
Finally, add in the 21.6 points he is scoring per game, with 40 percent shooting from beyond the arc, and you have a threat on both sides of the ball who can help Chicago push for a playoff/play-in spot.
Now all of this isn’t to say White or Satoranský aren’t talented guards in their own right, but rather that Brogdon fits a more niche need the Bulls need out of their guard whom they will pair with LaVine, namely someone who can provide some defensive relief on the perimeter.
With that being said however because Brogdon is having such an amazing season thus far, it will take quite a lot to bring him in.
