It should not be this soon that there is little to no path forward for the former Texas Tech Red Raiders 6-foot-4 and 205 pound shooting guard Zhaire Smith in the NBA two years after he was drafted. Smith was the 16th overall pick in the first round of the 2018 NBA Draft of the Phoenix Suns (soon after landing with the Philadelphia 76ers).

There is a connection between Eversley and Smith, from their brief time together in Philly. But Smith only got to play 13 career regular season games over the course of the past two years as a member of the Sixers (just two of which he started in). And he averaged 3.7 points per game, 1.2 rebounds, 0.9 assists, 0.4 steals, and 0.2 blocks. Smith shot 37.8 percent from the field, 31.6 percent from beyond the arc, and 66.7 percent from the free-throw line.

Smith is not just one of the biggest free agent targets in terms of who would make sense for the Bulls, but he is one of the most intriguing names left on the open market in general at this point in time. He’s still just 21 years old, and showed flashes at different points for the last two years that he can be a solid shooting guard in the NBA for a good while.

The Pistons waived Smith after they got him in a trade from the Sixers last month. It’s a bit surprising that no one has picked him up yet. If there’s no other problems that aren’t known in the public eye for Smith, then Smith might be the best free agent target that the Bulls could have as a final addition to the Training Camp/preseason roster.
