Chicago Bulls: 3 takeaways from the risky Patrick Williams fourth pick

Draft night trade is unlikely now
There were anticipated discussions that the Bulls might be very willing to move their fourth overall pick in the 2020 draft lottery. And with the lottery now wrapped up, it doesn’t look like the Bulls are going to make a move at any point of the draft (outside of maybe in the mid-to-late second round). The last remaining pick that the Bulls hold in the 2020 draft as it stands now is that Grizzlies 44th overall selection in the second round.
If the Bulls were looking to move the fourth pick after making the actual selection on draft night, they would likely have taken a player that is more appealing to other teams around the NBA than Williams. Not to say that Williams won’t work out in the end for the Bulls, but he didn’t look to be that high up on many draft boards.
And most of the anticipated trades that the Bulls were going to make coming into draft night (i.e. with the Philadelphia 76ers, Golden State Warriors, etc.) were hopes that were dashed by the halfway point of the first round. The Warriors hung onto their second overall pick in the draft lottery to get former Memphis center James Wiseman. And the Sixers made that huge trade with the Los Angeles Lakers heading into draft night.
Much like we’ll have to do with the development of Williams as a whole in the coming months, Bulls fans will have to be patient with the process of seeing if Karnisovas and Eversley pull off a big trade this offseason. There’s likely a developed plan in place for how the Bulls will piece Williams together in the rotation alongside the rest of this young core.
