Chicago Bulls: 3 takeaways from the risky Patrick Williams fourth pick

There was a pretty unexpected pick for the Chicago Bulls with the four slot in the 2020 NBA Draft Lottery, with former FSU F Patrick Williams.

What looks like the biggest reach of the top 10 of the 2020 NBA Draft Lottery thus far, the Chicago Bulls and newly hired executive vice president of basketball operations and general manager Marc Eversley picked the former Florida State Seminoles standout freshman forward Patrick Williams. The reigning ACC Sixth Man of the Year and 2019-20 All-ACC Freshman Team selection Williams is an interesting addition to the current Bulls roster at hand.

The 6-foot-8 and 225 pound former blue chip recruit and Charlotte, NC, native Williams got picked fourth overall by the Bulls in the 2020 draft lottery. There were some whispers leading up to draft night (taking part on Nov. 18) that the Bulls would have Williams in their group of players at the top of their board.

Other names that were commonly considered were the former Iowa State Cyclones sophomore point guard Tyrese Haliburton, Dayton Fliers sophomore breakthrough forward Obi Toppin, Maccabi Tel Aviv shooting guard/wing Deni Avdija, and USC Trojans freshman power forward/center Onyeka Okongwu, among others.

The Bulls do still hold the 44th overall pick in the second round of the 2020 draft (originally of the Memphis Grizzlies). But the fourth pick was the namestay that the Bulls were looking to get to boost this rebuild heading into its fourth year. They did get a pick that not many fans in the Windy City expected, but we’ll see how this plays out heading into the 2020-21 season.

If one thing is for sure, we shouldn’t doubt the development ability of the former Oklahoma City Thunder head coach Billy Donovan of younger forwards like Williams. Here’s a look at three takeaways from the Bulls picking the former Noles forward Williams fourth overall.
