The head coaching search for the Chicago Bulls to replace Jim Boylen could now turn to the Los Angeles Clippers assistant Tyronn Lue.
The search is now on for the Chicago Bulls to find their next head coach, and hopefully it’s a better one after the departure of the former head man Jim Boylen. Entering the weekend, it was announced by the Bulls on the morning of Aug. 14 that they would be parting ways with Boylen after nearly two full seasons at the helm.
Some names are already emerging in the Bulls head coaching search, such as Philadelphia 76ers assistant Ime Udoka, Denver Nuggets lead assistant Wes Unseld Jr., and the former Brooklyn Nets head coach Kenny Atkinson. But what other names could emerge in the Bulls coaching search in the near future?
According to a report from ESPN NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski, the former Cleveland Cavaliers head coach Tyronn Lue is “emerging as a leading NBA coaching candidate” with so many teams seeing openings at the position this offseason. And one of the teams mentioned that could be a landing spot for Lue in that Woj report is the Bulls. Here’s more on what he has to say on that matter.
"Once again, there are star-powered job openings in the NBA — including Brooklyn — and younger, talented rosters in New Orleans and Chicago. Based upon the playoffs, there are potential vacancies in Philadelphia and Houston. In all except for Chicago, Lue looms as a candidate. In most instances, NBA coaching hires are shaped by the formation of rosters and the complicated dynamics of the stars driving them. Lue resonates with the uber-talented franchises whose major talent require a commanding, pedigreed presence to register respect."
With the New Orleans Pelicans just recently parting ways with now former head coach Alvin Gentry also over the weekend, more high-profile openings are coming about. The Pelicans are an appealing job from the standpoint of all the young talent they have on the roster. And the Bulls have a similar offering, just not with a player like rookie forward Zion Williamson or first-time All-Star and small forward Brandon Ingram.
The Bulls have young and emerging talents such as power forward Lauri Markkanen, shooting guard Zach LaVine, point guard Coby White, center Wendell Carter Jr., and center Daniel Gafford, among others, that would be appealing to build around. If the Bulls do want to take another name into account, then Lue could be one worth following.
That stint for bits and pieces of four seasons as Cavaliers head coach was the only time Lue held this position in the NBA. He is currently on staff under head coach Doc Rivers with the Los Angeles Clippers, as an assistant. He’s also been an assistant with the Boston Celtics.
During his bits and pieces of four seasons as the Cavaliers head coach, Lue registered a record of 128-83. Two of those years saw current Lakers star forward LeBron James and Lue take the Cavaliers to the NBA Finals and lose. The other saw LeBron and Lue take the Cavaliers to the NBA Finals and beat the Golden State Warriors in a historic comeback upset.
There should be some other front runners on the shortlist of Bulls head coach to replace Boylen ahead of the Clippers assistant Lue. If the Bulls really want to dig deep this offseason, then watch out for Lue to come to the forefront.
