The lead assistant coach of the Chicago Bulls Chris Fleming is now reportedly interviewing for the New York Knicks head coaching job.
It is a well-known fact that the Chicago Bulls coaching staff has at least a good chance, if nothing else, to have a much different look to it heading into the 2020-21 season than it did in the 2019-20 campaign that was. The recent hiring of former Denver Nuggets general manager Arturas Karnisovas as the next lead voice in the front office prompted more significant changes. Karnisovas replaced John Paxson as the Bulls next executive VP of basketball operations.
And Karnisovas subsequently hired former Philadelphia 76ers VP of player personnel Marc Eversley to replace Gar Forman as the Bulls next general manager. What changes could come next in the Windy City?
It feels like the necessary adjustments that would come next would be to the coaching staff. While there are some solid pieces in place right now, some also have to go. The first that comes to mind is what to do with current Bulls head coach Jim Boylen.
As likely one of the least popular head coaches in the NBA at the moment, Boylen should see the door out of the Windy City sooner rather than later. But there are some pieces of staff that should remain in place. Included in that mix should be assistant coaches Chris Fleming and Roy Rogers.
However, the Bulls might not be able to hang onto the former of those two assistant coaches with the way his other job prospects are looking this offseason. According to a post on the Twitter timeline of Chris Haynes of Yahoo Sports on July 8, the New York Knicks are interviewing Fleming for their head coaching job.
Haynes describes Fleming as an “innovative offensive architect” in his tweet on this matter. That largely describes the impact Fleming had, especially in his time as an assistant on the Brooklyn Nets staff under their former head coach Kenny Atkinson. Previous to holding the Nets assistant coaching job, Fleming was on staff with the Nuggets.
Although he isn’t as proven as some of the other head coaching candidates the Knicks could consider at this point in time, Fleming would definitely make waves as their next hire. The Knicks are attempting to find a full-time replacement for former head coach David Fizdale.
