Sixth Man: Coby White, Guard

If the Bulls are going to move away from investing more into the former North Carolina Tar Heels point guard Coby White as their potential future face of the franchise, then it has to be with the right piece in place. And landing someone like LaMelo is at least worth a try for the Bull to see how these two could co-exist in the Windy City.

White spent most of his rookie season as a volume scorer that was incredibly inconsistent with his shooting percentages off the bench. But he did improve as the season moved along. It is a real shame that the season ended when it did since he was the last Eastern Conference Rookie of the Month to be named prior to the novel coronavirus pandemic-induced season hiatus.

He received the honors of Eastern Conference Rookie of the Month with a scorching streak in February where he was averaging around 20 points per game, and registering some of the most efficient numbers of his rookie campaign to date.

For the season as a whole, White averaged 13.2 points per game, 3.5 rebounds, 2.7 assists, 0.8 steals, and 0.1 blocks. He shot 39.4 percent from the field, 35.4 percent from beyond the arc, and 79.1 percent from the free-throw line. That amounted to an effective field goal percentage of 47.8 and a 50.1 true shooting percentage.

Most of the advanced metrics don’t do the improvement White had over his rookie season justice. He ended on a high note, and that should be well received for the role he receives at the outset of next season. Even if the Bulls have the opportunity to pick a more sure thing as a potential face of the franchise at guard, White should be the sixth man at the very least.
