The grand prize that most teams would likely be seeking out in the 2020 NBA Draft is not someone like Edwards, former Memphis Tigers center James Wiseman, USC Trojans center Onyeka Okwongu, or Maccabi Tel Aviv wing Deni Avdija. Instead, it is most widely considered former NBL and Illawarra Hawks 6-foot-7 point guard LaMelo Ball.
Pretty much all but one phase of LaMelo’s game is up to standard with who should be the No. 1 overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft. If he could find a way to correct his shooting stroke, then he should be considered the bona fide top prospect in this draft class. But the problem is that, if he doesn’t, he could end up having a run like his brother did at the outset of his career.
On the other hand, the good news in that regard is that New Orleans Pelicans point guard Lonzo Ball did manage to fix his shooting stroke from deep this season. Lonzo shot a much improved 38.4 percent from downtown this season so far.
Moreover, LaMelo is a stout finisher, great distributor of the ball, and very effective at running fast in transition. On defense, he’s stingy and should grab a lot of steals at the next level. He’s also very good off-ball, and could get a lot more blocks than the average point guard due to his length.
Considering the Bulls are still very well seeking out their answer at point guard, despite drafting Coby seventh overall last year, Ball should be a great fit. Maybe Coby could slot alongside LaMelo or join the second unit in a combo guard role.
