As far as a potential Bulls big board for the 2020 NBA Draft would go, the former Kentucky Wildcats highly touted true freshman 6-foot-3 and 200 pound combo guard Tyrese Maxey should be in the top 10. But a lot of 2020 draft big boards currently hold Maxey out as a late lottery or late teens pick in the first round.
Maxey brings a lot of the tools to the table that the Bulls need and they don’t currently have. He’s a combo guard that has decent potential as a defender, and can be a primary ball handler that efficiently runs the offense. He would be able to dish the ball out to his teammates consistently better than someone like LaVine does. All too often, LaVine is found with stat lines that include more than 35 points and less than three assists.
During his true freshman campaign under head coach John Calipari at Kentucky, Maxey played in 31 games (starting in 28 of them). He averaged 14.0 points per game, 4.3 rebounds, 3.2 assists, 0.9 steals, and 0.4 blocks. That allotted with a box plus/minus rating of 4.4, .134 win shares per 40 minutes, and a 53.1 true shooting percentage.
The comparisons to the likes of Toronto Raptors point guard Kyle Lowry and a slightly altered hybrid of Oklahoma City Thunder guard Shai-Gilgeous Alexander and Washington Wizards shooting guard Bradley Beal are relevant. If Maxey continues to improve as a shot creator and defender, he’ll be very lethal at the next level.
