Chicago Bulls: 3 burning questions for the upcoming offseason
2. What to do with Jim Boylen?
Maybe the biggest current storyline heading into the offseason for the Bulls is what they’ll do about the coaching situation. Now that the Reinsdorfs finally made the move to send out former vice president of basketball operations John Paxson and general manager Gar Forman about two months ago, most of the focus is now shifting to potential changes made to the coaching staff.
Jim Boylen‘s job status doesn’t look too secure at the moment.
The Bulls hired former Denver Nuggets general manager Arturas Karnisovas to be the next executive vice president of basketball operations, essentially replacing Paxson as the lead voice in the front office. Karnisovas then hired former Philadelphia 76ers vice president of player personnel Marc Eversley to replace Forman as general manager.
According to a report from K.C. Johnson of NBC Sports Chicago, the current front runner to replace Boylen (if the Bulls actually do so this offseason) is the Sixers lead assistant coach Ime Udoka. If the Bulls do decide to replace Boylen with a younger and likely more promising head coaching candidate like Udoka, it would be a very popular move in the media and with the fan base.
There are other coaching options that the Bulls could target. But first they need to actually conduct a full on coaching search, instead of making a quick and unforeseen hire like they did with Boylen or former head coach Fred Hoiberg.
It will also be interesting to see what the Bulls do with the assistants on staff if they do hire a new head coach. The likes of former Houston Rockets assistant Roy Rodgers and former Brooklyn Nets assistant Chris Fleming could have their status in flux if a new head coach is brought aboard in the Windy City.
