It may be a long shot for the Bulls to try and pry away the superstar 6-foot-11 big man Anthony Davis from the Lakers, but it’s worth the effort. If nothing else, the Bulls could start to get him to buy into what they bring to the table over the long haul in this rebuild. Davis’ current contract runs up in the 2021 offseason.
The Lakers could go ahead and make the move to re-sign Davis with a supermax annual salary, but the Bulls could get him back to his hometown now and land that true superstar they’ve needed since Jimmy Butler was traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves. AD would also have to be willing to separate from the superstar duo he’s featured in alongside forward LeBron James.
Davis has a player option that he could work out of this coming offseason. He’s currently making around $26 million per year. And technically the final year of a deal that he originally signed with the Pelicans comes next season.
In 55 games played so far this season, AD is averaging 26.7 points per game, 9.4 rebounds, 3.4 assists, 1.5 steals, and 2.4 blocks, while shooting 51.1 percent from the field, 33.5 percent from beyond the arc, and 84.5 percent from the charity stripe. He’s one of the best players in the NBA when healthy and ready to play.
This move for the Bulls to go after AD would be more about getting his attention to the Windy City than actually having Karnisovas think he could sign him. The Bulls really have to change their image to try and get a player like AD to the Windy City, but they have to make bold moves to get on the necessary path back to playoff contention.
