Chicago Bulls: 4 early 2020 free agent targets for Arturas Karnisovas
One of the players that will truly fly under-the-radar in the lead up to this free agent cycle is the Detroit Pistons 6-foot-10 24-year-old power forward Christian Wood. The UNLV Rebels product and Long Beach, CA, native is having a sensational season in a Pistons frontcourt rotation in a situation that was very volatile ahead of the trade deadline.
At the outset of the 2019-20 regular season, the Pistons were looking for what direction to take the frontcourt rotation in with a looming trade situation surrounding center Andre Drummond. At the deadline, they would deal Drummond to the Central Division foe Cleveland Cavaliers, which made Wood as the most productive big man in the rotation.
Either way, both Wood and Drummond are set to be free agents this coming offseason. The former of the two played in 62 games with the Pistons in the season that is currently placed on pause. He’s averaging 13.1 points per game, 6.1 rebounds, 1.0 assists, 0.5 steals, and 0.9 blocks, while shooting 56.7 percent from the field, 38.6 percent from beyond the arc, and 74.4 percent from the charity stripe.
He’s improving in nearly every facet of his game, and becoming a true floor spacing big man threat from deep. Wood is registering a career-best offensive rating of 123, 3.1 box plus/minus rating, 65.9 true shooting percentage, and .184 win shares per 48 minutes. The development with his true shooting percentage is a great sign of what’s to come.
