There is now reported interest in the Chicago Bulls to go after point guard Goran Dragic and small forward Derrick Jones Jr. of the Miami Heat.
Given all the recent discussion surrounding the Chicago Bulls potential front office changes that could be coming ahead of next season, the roster changes could be following soon thereafter.
The Bulls are in the midst of the third year of their rebuild and the situation is starting to flounder. Vice president of basketball operations John Paxson and general manager Gar Forman didn’t lead this rebuild to much success so far, hence why these front office changes on looming in the first place.
According to a report from Joe Cowley of the Chicago Sun-Times, the Bulls have been putting two players from the Miami Heat “under the microscope”. Those two Heat players includes veteran point guard Goran Dragic and the reigning Slam Dunk Contest Champion and small forward Derrick Jones Jr.
Ironic that the Bulls are going after a model of a team that they could’ve built themselves when they traded star small forward Jimmy Butler to the Minnesota Timberwolves back in 2017. But at least there’s something tangible that the Bulls are looking into for making roster moves whenever the offseason arrives.
Here’s more on what this piece from Cowley of the Chicago Sun-Times had to say on the interest in Jones Jr. and Dragic.
"The Bulls have been putting both point guard Goran Dragic and small forward Derrick Jones Jr. under the microscope the last month, and are hoping the new hire — or hires — will be aggressive on the trade front to move a tight cap corner that they have painted themselves into."
Butler spent the 2019-20 season so far getting head coach Erik Spoelstra and the Heat to the next level in the Eastern Conference. Dragic and Jones Jr. were both solid pieces in the supporting cast. And each could help fill some depth needs in the Bulls camp.
The Bulls entered the novel coronavirus pandemic-induced NBA season hiatus with a record of 22-43. Meanwhile, the Heat would be directly in the playoff conversation if and when the season were to start back up in the coming months.
