This is a tough decision for these two teams at this point of the 2006 NBA Re-draft to choose between one former Longhorn and also the former Washington Huskies shooting guard Brandon Roy. The Minnesota Timberwolves originally picked Roy with the sixth overall pick in this draft, but his best years came with the Portland Trail Blazers.
Roy is overall the most accomplished player at this point of the re-draft. His knees just got the best of him, as his NBA run would end due to injury problems in 2013. Nonetheless, Roy racked up a career 115 offensive rating, .155 win shares per 48 minutes, and a 3.6 box plus/minus rating.
He also tallied up just north of 37 career win shares, Rookie of the Year honors, two All-NBA selections, and three All-Star selections.
Even back in the 2006 NBA Draft, the Raptors were still finding value in the second round. But this was also the draft where the Raptors picked Bargnani first overall, who was one of the bigger busts of the 2000’s (at least among first overall picks). They did get this one right, with former Longhorn forward P.J. Tucker getting selected 35th overall in the second round.
This time around, the Boston Celtics take a flier out on the current Rockets two-way forward Tucker with the seventh overall pick. The Celtics get a player in Tucker who has played in 646 career regular season games, mostly with the Rockets. His career really got off and running under Mike D’Antoni with the Phoenix Suns in 2012-13.
Tucker registered 34 career win shares, a 6.7 value over replacement player rating, and a -0.6 box plus/minus rating. A good Celtics team in the late 2000’s gets a pretty big boost on both ends of the floor by landing Tucker.
