Although he is currently a part of the 2021 recruiting class, the Congolese 6-foot-8 and 205 pound small forward Jonathan Kuminga could reclassify in the near future to 2020 if he so chooses. Kuminga would have to make his decision soon if he was to reclassify, but he appears to be patiently taking his time to stick to a certain cycle.
There’s also the opportunity for Kuminga to take his talents overseas like point guard LaMelo Ball and combo guard R.J. Hampton did in the NBL last year. He does currently hold offers from more than 25 schools, including most of the college hoops blue bloods. But he has yet to make a decision about reclassifying or committing to a school.
As far as the 2021 recruiting class goes, Kuminga ranks as the nation’s top high school prospect. He’s a product of The Patrick School and his 247Sports recruiting profile compares to him to the former Florida State forward and Orlando Magic two-way youngster Jonathan Isaac. There is a valid comparison there, but Kuminga does have a higher ceiling than Isaac.
Kuminga has a ceiling higher than maybe any other prospect in this class, but that also comes with a lower floor than the rest of the top three picks in this mock. He needs to improve his shot selection and consistency from deep. His ability to beat players off the dribble, defend just about anyone, and command an offense is not in question.
The 247Sports Crystal Ball Predictions are mostly undecided, but he does have one expert picking him to land with Duke and another going with the LSU Tigers.
Any team that lands Kuminga, including the rebuilding Washington Wizards, would be very fortunate to do so. This would be a lucky land for the Wizards as they could complete a trio of Wall, Bradley Beal, and Kuminga in this case.
