6. Doug McDermott

  • Draft year: 2014
  • Pick: 11

I’ll probably die on Doug McDermott Island, but that’s something I’m at peace with. I was convinced while the Bulls had him on their roster that they weren’t using him correctly, and I’m still convinced of that to this day. In fact, I still don’t think any team has used him correctly.

For his career, nearly half of his shot attempts have come from behind the arc. I get it. He’s a good 3-point shooter, but he’s so much more than that. He moves well off the ball, he can get to the rim when he wants to and he has great size for a perimeter guy.

Part of the issue with Doug, though, is his confidence. He often passed up good, quality looks that he should’ve taken when he was on the Bulls, and the same things are happening to this day.

McDermott’s time with the Bulls wasn’t all that good, but now, he’s a valuable contributor on a solid playoff team. That’s not a bad place to be.
