Seeking out another guard that could have a lower ceiling with the Chicago Bulls might not be the best move in the 2020 NBA Draft. But the Bulls are still in a position to pick the best player left on the board at the outset of this year’s draft. That’s where the potential selection of the Kentucky Wildcats 6-foot-3 combo guard Tyrese Maxey could come into play.

Maxey could still be a good fit with the Bulls, especially if they decide to move away from 6-foot-7 combo guard Tomas Satoransky and 6-foot-6 shooting guard Zach LaVine. Placing Maxey alongside the Bulls rookie point guard Coby White could be an interesting move for the future. The problem is that the Bulls have to be careful not to become the next Cleveland Cavaliers.

Making a weird move to pick up the former Vanderbilt Commodores point guard and five-star recruit Darius Garland in the 2019 NBA Draft, the Cavaliers forced a fit that isn’t doing great with fellow guard Collin Sexton. Maybe move out either LaVine or Satoransky in the next year or two and the Bulls could find a nice backcourt trio along with White and Maxey.

Last season with Kentucky, Maxey averaged 14.0 points per game, 4.3 rebounds, and 3.2 assists, while shooting 42.7 percent from the field and 29.2 percent from beyond the arc. At first glance it appears that the Bulls wouldn’t be doing themselves much good by drafting Maxey when they still have White in the fold.

But if White doesn’t work out after an up and down rookie season up to this point, to say the very least, then having an insurance policy might not be the worst option.
