March Madness is the perfect opportunity for college hoops stars that play in a non-power conference like that of San Diego State Aztecs former transfer point guard Malachi Flynn to shine in the national spotlight. San Diego State was one of the more underrated teams over the course of the 2019-20 regular season.
They were the lone undefeated men’s basketball team in the entire country for a good portion of the regular season. Flynn’s breakthrough is a big reason why the San Diego State was so good much of the way.
However, the NCAA Tournament is that aforementioned chance to shine for Flynn and to see a big rise in his draft stock. Most NBA Mock Drafts would hold Flynn out as about a late first or early-to-mid second round pick. His 2020 NBA Draft stock should hold him with a very high floor, but the ceiling doesn’t appear to be too high at the moment either.
So far this season, Flynn is averaging 17.6 points per game, 4.4 rebounds, and 5.1 assists, while shooting 44.7 percent from the field, and 37.2 percent from beyond the arc. He’s also getting much better at getting to the free-throw line as he’s averaging around a career-best of 4.5 attempts per game from the charity stripe and hitting them at a clip of around 86 percent.
This 6-foot-1 former Washington State Cougars standout also has a very solid offensive rating of 125.9 this season and a sparkling defensive rating of 89.3. The true versatility of Flynn this season shows that he can be a valuable floor general at the next level. He just needs to show that in the national spotlight that is the NCAA Tournament.
