Chicago Bulls: Coby White’s production leads to a fun award
By Luke Askew
Chicago Bulls rookie guard Coby White absolutely balled out in February, and the NBA took notice. His production led to some cool hardware.
Does winning Eastern Conference Rookie of the Month actually mean anything? Of course not. But it’s a cool honor. Chicago Bulls guard Coby White won the award for the month of February. Zion Williamson, respectively, won the award for the Western Conference.
In the month of February, White averaged 20.1 points per game on very respectable .433/.411/.935 shooting splits to go along with 4.1 assists and four rebounds.
Those are good numbers for anybody, but especially for a rookie point guard who’s struggled mightily with both efficiency and consistency. The Bulls’ eight games in February were the first extended stretch of efficient and consistent Coby we’ve ever seen, and it was glorious.
Sure, the Bulls lost seven of their eight games in February, but Coby wasn’t the reason why. He gave the Bulls everything they needed.
White’s flashy month was highlighted by a three-game stretch where he scored at least 33 points each night, capped off by a 35-point performance against his friend Chris Paul and the Oklahoma City Thunder.
During those three games, White was unconscious, scoring in a myriad of ways, including lighting up the court with tough threes. He connected on an absurd 18 of his 31 3-point attempts. That’s bonkers.
In the final stretch of the 2019-20 season, there isn’t much for Bulls fans to be excited about, but Coby’s development has spirits somewhat high. Hopefully there are plenty more months like February going forward for White.
