What do the Bulls need?
With so many injuries that the Chicago Bulls are dealing with at the moment, it seems like there’s no wrong move if there’s a trade they can make to both upgrade the roster and progress the rebuild. Those moves might be limited with the lack of big-time trade chips on the market this year. The lack of quality free agents for this summer is a big reason why there’s a lack of big names on the trade block.
A trade like the one the Bulls made last year to haul small forward Otto Porter Jr. from the Washington Wizards for that return of Jabari Parker and Bobby Portis looks like the right move for the Bulls this time around. The Bulls also got a good haul from the Wizards last offseason why they got guard Tomas Satoransky in a sign-and-trade deal.
The biggest positional needs at this trade deadline for Boylen and the Bulls are wing depth, scoring guard help, and any frontcourt assistance they can get in the short term. Frontcourt help isn’t a big long-term need if the Bulls plan to continue Daniel Gafford, Lauri Markkanen, and Wendell Carter Jr. as the key bigs in this rebuild.
However, wing depth has to be a theme of the trade deadline. With the lack of minutes the Bulls got out of OPJ since they got him from the Wizards combined with the inconsistent play of Hutchison, there has to be a better answer out there. And it doesn’t look like the Bulls are going to find that answer either in the 2020 NBA Draft or this cycle of free agency.
