While it might seem redundant for the Chicago Bulls to have two defensive stoppers on the roster at point guard like the 6-foot-4 former Providence Friar Kris Dunn and the former Oklahoma State Cowboy Smart, but it’s not as bad as you might think. The Bulls just lost Dunn to a reported right knee injury that could limit him for a while.

Smart is also a more well-rounded point guard than Dunn. His salary helps to match that of the former Pacers veteran power forward Thaddeus Young, and his contract would be on the books for much longer than Dunn’s current deal. Dunn is currently in the midst of the final year of his rookie contract.

What would appeal about Young for head coach Brad Stevens and the Celtics is his length and versatility. He is one of the lengthier fours they could get on the open trade market right now, and he can space the floor or post up on the offensive end of the floor.

If the Bulls don’t see plans for Dunn in their future, then landing Smart would add a good veteran presence that would be valuable in the locker room. He would also take this defense under head coach Jim Boylen to another level.

So far this season, Smart is averaging 12.3 points per game, 3.6 rebounds, 4.8 assists, and 1.5 steals, while shooting 37.4 percent from the field and 35.1 percent from three-point range. Smart is a much better three-point shooter than Dunn, and he could be a good return if the Bulls were willing to part ways with Young to the Celtics.
